AXOS Urban is consistently exploring better ways to engage with communities, potentially to overcome “consultation fatigue”, cynicism borne or tokenistic consultation, lack of faith in authorities and a feeling of not being listened to; that often blunts even the best-intentioned efforts to talk to the community.
In out latest project in Aireys Inlet and the surrounding area, in association with the Surf Coast Shire’s structure plan review, we brought three innovations.
Firstly- we borrowed a “participative observational” technique from anthropology- embedding our team in the community for 10 days and combining this with purpose-made street surveys, meetings, and many many conversations.
Secondly- we made sure we were visible, with a mini teardrop-style caravan acting as a focal point, a mobile billboard and spewing out balloons, flags, surveys and brochures. It was a local hit!
And thirdly- we made a film!
This is more than your usual documentation; it is an integrated part of our engagement. We find that young people especially will engage more enthusiastically with an interview on camera; our talented film crew are able to illustrate the points being raised far more effectively than multiple pages of written report.
